GENDER INEQUALITY

Gender Inequality

In simple terms, gender inequality is the unequal treatment of men and women, prioritizing any one gender over the other. Gender inequality sets grounds for discrimination where one gender is more privileged than the other.

It’s usually women who are discriminated against, underpaid, and overworked but there are also, cases where men are underappreciated.

The mindset of society is one of the main causes of discrimination based on gender. Lots of beliefs about men being more capable than women in different things are still going around and need to be terminated. Lots of people still think that women should stay at home and do household chores while men should go to offices to work and that the education of girls is pointless.

Also, women have less access to education than men and are often not given the chance to go to a proper school to learn. Poverty also contributes as a factor to illiteracy. Lots of children from villages don’t have access to writing and reading basics and no internet. Since there are differences in the level of education girls and boys receive especially in the more underdeveloped areas, there is a massive difference in the kind of opportunities that are accessible to girls. Only 6 countries in the world give women the same legal work rights as men. In lots of cases, when a man and a woman do the same level of work or job, woman is less paid as compared to the man. Lots of time in companies only men have access to be promoted to higher paying positions.

Lots of women don’t have legal protections against harassment in public and in workplaces which makes them feel unsafe and hesitant to continue working. Lots of time women are disrespected, overworked, and underpaid and don’t have protection against domestic sexual violence or domestic economic violence.

This leads to poverty and women are not able to afford good health care. There’s a severe lack of women in leadership especially political representation so there is no one to stand up for women when matters come up. Even racism plays a role. There are pay gaps between women of color and white women and even between men of color and white men. All of this leads to unequal treatment and no balance in society.

I think the words equal and fair in different things are very important in today’s world. It’s a basic right to have equal opportunities and it’s only fair that both genders get an equal appreciation for the same level of effort and skills.

I believe the simplest and most effective way to curb gender stereotypes and gender inequality is to spread awareness, especially among common people.

Also, improve employment opportunities for women and access to education facilities for young girls in the less developed areas. We must work towards changing society's traditional beliefs that women belong in the kitchen and at home while men should be the only breadwinners of the family. Women should not have to be economically dependent on their husbands. We also must make sure women’s rights against domestic violence and sexual assault don’t go ignored. Raise your voices whenever you get the chance. Lots of people don’t get the chance to speak up so if you get a chance, please take it. Also, women should be given more leadership access, especially in the bigger roles and representation in politics. And the main thing is that if a man and woman do the same work at the same level they should be paid equally. If you doesn't question a man of his success, credibility, and capability when he is a CEO, and a father then doesn’t think to even question a woman who is a mother and a CEO. Like the icon Ariana Grande said in an interview once, "it’s not about being above men, it’s about being equal to men."
