SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN THE WORKPLACE

Sexual Harassment in the Workplace

The #MeToo movement has led us to associate sexual harassment and assault with the pretentious world of movies and the film industry. Despite this common misconception, sexual harassment’s detrimental influence has permeated far beyond the silver screen. The corporate world, which is frequently thought of as a place of etiquette and professionalism, has been proven to be a hotbed of harassment incidents against women. Workplace power dynamics combined with structural gender inequality foster an atmosphere favourable to this kind of behaviour. The #MeToo movement's growing popularity led to a wider social awareness of the harassment that women were experiencing in a variety of professional settings, emphasizing the importance of giving these women's voices a platform.

Having seen how urgently this serious issue needed to be addressed, India took the initiative and passed the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act. This law was a critical turning point in the nation's efforts to provide safe, courteous, and equal environments for women in professional settings. Its particular goal was to reduce sexual harassment of women in the workplace. The POSH Act is a testament to the seriousness of this issue and a commitment to enact structural modifications that safeguard women's rights and dignity in the workplace.

The need for organizations to set up Internal Complaints Committees (ICCs) to address sexual harassment allegations is one of their key regulations. These committees function as internal channels for handling complaints, carrying out investigations, and suggesting suitable actions. Furthermore, the POSH Act does more for organizations than only ensure legal compliance; it acts as a catalyst for a more comprehensive culture shift.

Although the POSH Act is a big step in the right direction, strong implementation and enforcement are necessary for it to be effective. Companies need to actively seek to promote an inclusive and respectful culture rather than just following the law. Additionally, the act serves as a beacon for change, guiding organizations towards an era free from harassment at work and one in which everyone, including women, can follow their career-related ambitions without fear or compromise.
